Karen Consigli, RPR, CMP
EFFECTIVELY MANAGING WORK AND HOME

A working mother of three (soon to be four!) Karen has successfully progressed through a number of increasingly responsible positions in the HR field throughout her 19-year career with the public sector.

Beginning her career in an administrative support role with the hospital sector, she quickly pursued an opportunity with the Regional Municipality of Niagara, an upper-tier level of municipal government providing a variety of public services and programs to twelve area municipalities. The diversity of its operations includes public works infrastructure (ie. treatment/disposal of sewage; purification, supply/storage of water; solid waste management; management and maintenance of an arterial road system, Regional buildings and properties); community services (ie. social assistance; social housing; childcare and seniors services); public health services (ie. health protection; disease prevention; health promotion and injury prevention programs); administrative support services (ie. administration; finance; human resources; provincial offences).

In addition to the range of public services it provides, the Regional Municipality of Niagara affords its employees with numerous career development opportunities. Recognizing her potential coupled with her keen willingness, Niagara provided Karen with exposure to several different roles thereby allowing her to expand her skill set and scope of responsibility which eventually lead her to join the Human Resources Department, where she quickly took on the role of Recruitment Officer. She is currently the senior member of the Human Resources Associates’ team, a group of HR professionals providing generalist-consulting services to approximately 2500 employees, staff and management.

Over the years and with her continuing interest in professional career development, she achieved a Certificate in Human Resources Management, a Certificate in the Management of Human Resources, and a Certificate in Facilitation Skills Training. In addition to her post-secondary academic pursuits, she also obtained the professional designations of Certified Human Resources Professional, Registered Professional Recruiter, and Canadian Management Professional.

On a personal level, Karen balances her professional career with many roles at home with her family including various school and extra-curricular sports activities while also volunteering her time alongside her husband with their city’s minor baseball and select baseball associations. In her own spare time, she keeps busy with her part-time decorating business.

Upon her return from an anticipated and much welcomed hiatus, Karen will be continuing with her pursuit to expand her professional background and expertise as she moves forward toward her goal of management and leadership with the Region of Niagara. Balancing a fulfilling and satisfying career with an all important family life has been challenging at times but not insurmountable!





Barb Andrews-Hryniw, RPR
STAFFING FOR GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE

Barb started her professional career in the insurance industry and became a Personal Lines Underwriter. She then moved into Oil & Gas as an Executive Assistant. From there she took some time from her career to become a Domestic Engineer where she enjoyed working as a mother. In 1975 she started with the City of Calgary and she is now Staff/Administration Supervisor in the Customer Service Centre of Calgary Recreation.

As Staff/Administration Supervisor in a Registration Centre, Barb determines staffing needs, recruits, interviews and hires. She is involved in the active coaching, monitoring, evaluation, counseling and performance management of part-time staff, and acts as a resource to both full- and part-time employees.

She is also responsible for planning, scheduling and developing staff schedules that are functional and responsive to business demands. She identifies staff availability and level or areas of knowledge then allocates staff into appropriate shifts or areas in the Centre. She also works with the Operations Coordinator to ensure staffing levels meet customer demands and is the after-hours contact for staff schedule changes and conflicts.

An important aspect of Barb’s job is to identify opportunities for improvement, and to plan and implement changes that affect work policy, procedures and practices. She is a member of the Leadership Team that develops a vision to accomplish future objectives for the Centre.

Barb completed a Business Administration Certificate through the University of Calgary and by year end will have completed the Human Resources Certificate. Through the Institute of Professional Management she has obtained her Registered Professional Recruiter designation her next goal is to complete the CHRP designation.

Barb's passion is Feung Shui - the ancient Chinese art of placement. She loves to crochet, paint miniature houses, and garden. Barb, her husband Terry, and their family like to spend weekends camping in the Invermere Valley.


Sheri Dolomont, RPR, CMP
SOWING THE SEEDS FOR GROWTH

Sheri comes from a professional background that has combined Operations and Human Resource Management. Sheri did not begin her career directly in the Human Resources field; she first held two positions with Canada 3000 Airlines: Ground Staff Supervisor for the Halifax base and Technical Trainer covering Toronto to the Caribbean.

In the latter position, she was responsible for the delivery of corporate training programs focused on employee and passenger welfare as well as technical aircraft-specific training. After Canada 3000’s grounding in November 2001, Sheri took on the Human Resources Manager role at Blaze Marketing Solutions, a company with 450 employees across Canada. She reported directly to the managing partners, with a focus on recruiting and employee development.

Sheri joined Resolve Corporation in the summer of 2003. She currently holds the position of Manager, Human Resources for the Bridgewater, Nova Scotia location. Open since February 2000, Resolve started with 45 Customer Service Representatives and has grown to a workforce of over 500 employees in Bridgewater. Resolve Corporation has over 20 locations across North America, and almost 4,000 employees.

Building on her background of employee training and professional development, Sheri now focuses on building incentive programs, relationship and team building, recruiting, and retention.
Sheri holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, a Certificate in Communications from Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow, Scotland, and the City and Guilds 7331 Certificate in Training Techniques. Sheri also holds RPR and CMP designations from IPM, and will be writing the Professional Practice Assessment towards her CHRP designation this October.

Sheri spends her down time focused on the training of her dog Lex, a rescued Rhodesian Ridgeback, from the local SPCA. In addition, she is a novice gardener, and with British roots, has a great deal to live up to and learn from the rest of the family. So far, the plants are growing, even if she doesn’t know all their names yet.
